A stormwater pit is an accessible collection or junction point in a rainwater drainage system. A grated inlet can capture runoff from the ground surface, while side entries may receive pipes from downpipes, channel drains or other pits. The outlet carries water into the downstream stormwater line.
Many pits include a sump below the outlet. Heavier sediment can settle in this lower section instead of immediately entering the pipe. This makes the pit easier to inspect and clean, but the accumulated silt must be removed before it reaches outlet level.
Pits can be positioned at low points where runoff naturally concentrates, but location alone does not guarantee effective drainage. Surface levels, grate height, catchment area, pipe fall, outlet depth and the downstream discharge path all affect performance.

Stormwater pits are available in different sizes, materials and inlet arrangements. The selected unit must suit its purpose, incoming pipe levels, outlet size, expected runoff and installation environment. A shallow domestic surface-water pit is not interchangeable with every junction or high-flow application.
The grate or lid must also suit its location. Pedestrian areas need a secure cover appropriate for foot traffic, while pits installed where vehicles may pass require components designed and supported for the applicable loads. A cracked, loose or unsuitable cover is both a drainage and safety concern.

Surface debris can cover the grate or build up inside the sump until it reaches the outlet and begins entering the downstream pipe.
