Solar collectors absorb heat from sunlight. Depending on the system, water or a heat-transfer fluid circulates through the collector circuit and transfers that energy into water stored in an insulated tank. The stored hot water is then supplied to fixtures when needed.
Solar contribution changes with weather, collector orientation, shading, household use and system condition. A booster provides additional heating when the solar energy available is not enough to reach the required water temperature.

A split system places the collectors on the roof and the storage tank at ground level or another suitable location. A circulation pump and controls generally move heat between the collectors and tank. This reduces roof load from the storage cylinder but introduces pump and control components that require power and maintenance.
A thermosiphon system places the collector and storage tank together on the roof. Heated water rises naturally into the tank without a circulation pump. The roof structure, access, orientation, mounting and concentrated tank weight all need assessment before installation.

Loss of hot water does not always mean the collectors have failed. Problems can occur in the booster, circulation pump, controller, sensors, valves, cylinder, pipework or collector circuit. A visible roof leak, continuous relief discharge, pump noise, error indicator or increasing booster use should be assessed.
Maintenance requirements vary by brand, system type, water quality, roof exposure and booster. Follow the manufacturer’s schedule rather than relying on one interval for every system. Roof access and electrical or gas work are completed by appropriately licensed trades.

Water may come from a relief valve, pipe joint, cylinder, collector or roof penetration. Because roof leaks and hot pressurised water can be hazardous, arrange an assessment rather than climbing onto the roof.
Use the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. Arrange earlier attention for leaks, falling performance, unusual pump noise, booster problems, corrosion or visible collector damage.
